The
Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act was passed in congress just prior to
the Christmas recess. The purposes of the act are to strengthen implementation
of the Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act of 2005 by improving the
capacity of the United States Government to implement, leverage, and monitor
and evaluate programs to provide first-time or improved access to safe drinking
water, sanitation, and hygiene to the world’s poorest on an equitable and
sustainable basis, and for other purposes. The OU WaTER Center is
part of the United States University WASH Network that helped inform our
representatives on capitol hill of the need for increased monitoring and
evaluation of US water, sanitation and hygiene investments in developing
countries to assure that the bottom billion (those living on less than
$1US/day) are best served by these expenditures.
